Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother

On this day in 1900 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was born; the daughter of a Scottish Lord,  the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (at the time Lord Glamis) and his wife Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck.

She spent much of her childhood in the idyllic Glamis Castle in Scotland before becoming the wife of Albert, Duke of York and mother to Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret.

It wasn’t until the abdication of her brother-in-law Edward that her life changed, I imagine not in the direction her or her husband had wished when they became King and Queen of England, and as it got a lot harder for the people of Britain with the second world war the Royal family were an ever-present figure among the war-torn London, the King and Queen themselves visiting Londoners affected by the bombing.

After the death of her husband and the accession of her daughter, she became the figure we all remember her as today, the Queen Mother, still spending much of her time in her beloved Scotland before dying at the impressively grand age of 101 in March 2002.
